All aboard the hype train for TE Jared Wiley and five more observations from Day 7 of Chiefs training camp

Day 7 of Kansas City Chiefs training camp is in the books.

A sunny, nearly 90-degree day was saved by a steady wind. The Chiefs got after it with the usual drills - wide receivers one-on-one against defensive backs, offensive linemen one-on-one against defensive lineman, 7-on-7 and full 11-on-11 scrimmages.

Here are my top observations from attending camp on Sunday.

Emphasis on redzone work for the offense

The Chiefs' offense went right to work in the redzone at the begging of practice against no defense. This helps the quarterbacks and receivers establish timing and rhythm. It's noteworthy that rookie tight end Jared Wiley and third-year WR Justyn Ross took a lot of snaps during redzone work. Here's one of Wiley's multiple touchdown catches on the day.

Wiley has been one of the stars of camp throughout the first week . It's clear that the Chiefs see him as an immediate redzone threat. Ross has shown in previous camps that he provides value in the redzone, proving it again today with a leaping touchdown catch over cornerback Joshua Williams. The offense later did some more redzone work against the defense with mixed results.

Bryan Cook looks like and elite-caliber safety

Cook had a dominate day of practice, nearly intercepting two passes - including this deep shot from quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Cook also had a pass breakup in the redzone against WR Skyy Moore and stripped the ball away from running back Isiah Pacheco. It's safe to say that Cook has fully recovered from his season-ending ankle injury from last season, and he could establish himself as one of the best safeties in the league in 2024.

WR Montrell Washington is emerging as a dark horse candidate for a roster spot

Washington had a big day during practice on Saturday and he carried that momentum over to Sunday. Primarily working with the second-team offense, Washington is catching everything in sight, specifically deep passes. He possesses a lot of speed and is an experienced kick returner. It may still be an uphill battle for Washington to make the 53-man roster, but he has certainly put himself on the radar.

Deneric Prince could be the Chiefs' new RB2

Clyde-Edwards Helaire didn't practice today due to an illness, but Prince has consistently been taking RB2 snaps over him since the beginning of camp . Prince is noticeably more explosive and powerful that Edwards-Helaire, as you can see on this touchdown run.

Prince is also a good pass-catching back, which we saw from him during last year's camp. His biggest hurdle to being the next man up behind Pacheco is pass protection, which while is improved from last year, remains a bit inconsistent.

Kelvin Joseph is staking his claim for the No. 2 CB job

One of the biggest battles of Chiefs camp is for the starting cornerback job opposite Trent McDuffie. Joshua Williams and Nazeeh Johnson have gotten the first opportunities, but with Johnson sidelined with a hamstring injury today, Joseph stepped up with a couple of impressive pass breakups. Joseph was one of the standouts during offseason OTAs and is very much in the mix to be a starter.

The Chiefs' TE room is very deep

We know that Travis Kelce isn't going anywhere anytime soon and remains an elite tight end. Behind him is fourth-year guy Noah Gray, who is a solid blocker, special teams player and occasional sneaky pass catching threat. I've already mentioned Wiley as one of the top stars of camp, but not to be forgotten is offseason acquisition Irv Smith Jr.

The Chiefs have utilized Smith Jr. as both a tight end and a full back, which is a valuable thing in coach Andy Reid's offense. Smith Jr. has caught everything thrown his way, including multiple touchdowns. His versatility and redzone abilities could force the Chiefs' hand to keep four TEs on the roster this year.
