Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes Sounds Off On Being Underpaid

When Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes signed his colossal 10-year, $450 million contract extension back in 2020, it turned heads.

Now, Mahomes’ average annual value of $45 million is actually pretty low.

Since Mahomes inked his deal four years ago, a flurry of quarterbacks around the NFL have landed larger deals in terms of yearly salary, making Mahomes underpaid .

However, the three-time Super Bowl champion does not seem bothered by it.

“It’s awesome for the quarterback position, but I think all positions,” Mahomes said, via Jarrett Bell of USA Today . “I know every time a contract comes up, everybody looks at my APY (average per year) and everything like that. I’m doing pretty well myself. For me, it’s just about going out there trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I feel like I’m doing a great job of that.”

So it doesn’t look like Mahomes will be holding out of Chiefs camp anytime soon.

Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence and Jordan Love are all tied for being the highest-paid players in NFL history, earning $55 million per year.

As a matter of fact, there are 10 quarterbacks making more annual money than Mahomes, who is tied with Kirk Cousins for 11th.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes obviously has bigger goals

Let’s be honest: there isn’t much you can do with $55 million per year that you can’t do with $45 million per year, and Mahomes’ total contract as a whole blows every other signal-caller out of the water (no one is coming close to 10 years).

As Mahomes said: he is doing just fine.

The two-time MVP isn’t chasing money at this point: he is chasing history.

Mahomes and the Chiefs are looking to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls (the Green Bay Packers did win three straight championships during the 1960s before the Super Bowl was a thing).

Not only that, but Mahomes is aiming to become the best quarterback to ever do it, and in order to achieve that feat, he needs to add some more rings.

Tom Brady is the consensus greatest of all-time and won seven titles during his illustrious NFL career. Mahomes needs four more to equal Brady, so he still has a long way to go.

The Chiefs are once again the favorites to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl this year, but they will face stiff competition from clubs like the Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Houston Texans and maybe even the New York Jets.

Plus, out in the NFC, the San Francisco 49ers are still around and are seeking revenge on Kansas City after the Chiefs handed them two Super Bowl losses in the last five years. There are also squads such as the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys who could crash the Super Bowl party, as well.

To put it simply, Mahomes isn’t too concerned with other quarterbacks surpassing him from a monetary standpoint. At this juncture, Patrick Mahomes cares about building his legacy.
