Patrick Mahomes Speaks His Truth About Contract Situation After Jordan Love Deal

There's no doubt that Patrick Mahomes deserves to be the NFL's highest-paid player. As lavish new deals for objectively inferior quarterbacks continue re-setting the market, though, the Kansas City Chiefs superstar isn't worried about how his earnings stack up.

After both the Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa and Green Bay Packers' Jordan Love recently inked contracts that surpassed his own, Mahomes pointedly downplayed being paid less than other signal-callers across the league.

“It’s awesome for the quarterback position, but I think all positions. I know every time a contract comes up, everybody looks at my APY (average per year) and everything like that. I’m doing pretty well myself," he said, per Jarrett Bell of USA TODAY. "For me, it’s just about going out there trying to win football games, trying to make money for my family at the end of the day. I feel like I’m doing a great job of that.”

The most decorated player at this point in his NFL career, Mahomes signed a 10-year, $450 million contract with the Chiefs in 2020. His contract was re-structured last season, setting Mahomes up to earn an average of $52.6 million per year through 2026.

Even while Love and Tagovailoa join the likes of Joe Burrow and Trevor Lawrence as quarterbacks making more than Mahomes, Kansas City's franchise player believes the team still has his best interests at heart.

"It's about having that plan, that constant communication. And we have that here," he said. "I'm happy to see guys going out and getting as much money as possible. That's awesome for the sport. But here we have a great communication system where I feel like we've done the best with what we can do."
