Rocks hitting, damaging cars in Northland neighborhood, frustrating drivers

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Drivers in one Northland neighborhood in Kansas City want to know who’s damaging their cars.

People living near Kellybrook Elementary School are complaining of someone throwing rocks at their cars as they drive past. Some believe it’s teenagers who live nearby causing the trouble.

The stretch of road near NE 108th Street and N. Eastern Road is an avenue of concern.

A series of drivers say late night drives through this area often result in broken windows. They’ve complained to Kansas City police about rocks being thrown at their cars, causing hundreds of dollars in damage.

Alex Murray said it was after 1:45 a.m. Monday when he was returning from a late night fast food run. He was driving near the school when his windshield was hit by a rock as he drove down Eastern Road.

Murray told Kansas City police he turned around to make sure he hadn’t hit a person in the dark, and a second rock hit his car door. He’ll claim both repairs on his auto insurance.

“I think it could be teenagers who have nothing better to do other than the adrenaline they get from causing property damage to people’s cars,” Murray said.

More neighbors are complaining on social media, many of whom blame teenagers who may be hiding in nearby bushes on the roadside. A spokesperson for the Kansas City Police Department said officers aren’t aware of an uptick in property crimes in the neighborhoods near Kellybrook Elementary School.

Mackenzie Landreth said her daughter’s car was hit that same night as Murray’s incident.

Landreth shared photos with FOX4, showing a shattered window on her daughter’s car, which was caused when a big rock shammed through the car’s windshield. She’ll pay for those repairs out of pocket. Landreth worries what would happen if the rocks hit a person inside the car instead.

“It’s going to be either someone driving or someone’s going to take it in their hands to find these kids. I don’t want to see anything bad happen. I just want to see them caught,” Landreth said on Tuesday.

KCPD if this happens to you, call 911 and file a police report immediately. Officers can’t investigate crimes they don’t know about.
