Patrick Mahomes isn’t necessarily a revenge-minded individual, but he hasn’t had to be in his NFL career. When you win three Super Bowls, are voted to six Pro Bowls, are named to two first-team All-Pro squads, and you already have two NFL MVP and three Super Bowl MVP awards in your first six seasons as a starter in the league, what more is there for you to prove?
At this point, Mahomes — who is already rightly considered one of the best quarterbacks in pro football history — might have to look around for a chip on his shoulder.
Fortunately for the Kansas City Chiefs, and unfortunately for the rest of the NFL, Mahomes' fellow players just did that. The NFL, which tabulates its top 100 players list via votes from players, gave Mahomes this placement after the 2023 season.
Something tells me you're gonna pay for that, guys.
No, 2023 wasn’t Mahomes’ best season — he completed 67.7% of his passes for 7.0 yards per attempt, 33 touchdowns, 15 interceptions, and a passer rating of 94.1. He was also the NFL’s worst deep passer from an efficiency perspective, but anyone who watched Chiefs football at even a cursory level last season understood that 99% of that was on one of the most underwhelming receiver groups in the NFL.
Now, with Marquise "Hollywood" Brown and Xavier Worthy in the fold via free agency and the draft, Mahomes is spinning it deep as he did when he had Tyreek Hill on his team, and Travis Kelce was in his prime.
Now, the Chiefs are trying to become the first team in the Super Bowl era to win three straight NFL championships. And everyone who has to go up against Patrick Mahomes just gave him one more arrow in his arsenal.
This was a major mistake.
