NFL players snub Patrick Mahomes from top 3 players despite Super Bowl exploits

Patrick Mahomes came in at No. 4 on the NFL Top 100 players list as the Kansas City Chiefs superstar's peers ranked Tyreek Hill the best in the league .

Mahomes , the two-time holder of the Top 100's No. 1 spot, was not even awarded a spot in the top three. The two-time MVP’s 4,183 passing yards and 27 touchdowns this past season neared his career-low totals of 2019, but he still led the Chiefs to another Lombardi Trophy.

The 2023 season was a struggle for the Chiefs, undergoing long stretches of mediocrity. Mahomes threw a career-high 14 interceptions as his receiving corps floundered at times during a difficult regular season, but he course-corrected in the playoffs.

With Mahomes leading the way, the Chiefs became the first franchise to go back-to-back since Tom Brady ’s New England Patriots two decades ago. It was his third Super Bowl win and third Super Bowl MVP within a five-year span.

The 28-year-old wizard is already considered one of the best quarterbacks the game has ever seen, and there’s no telling where he will rank when it’s all said and done in sports history, let alone the NFL. And yet, Mahomes comes in at No. 4 on the Top 100 players list in 2024 - missing out on a top-3 berth.

Mahomes wasn’t even the top quarterback on the list, with Baltimore Ravens star and league MVP Lamar Jackson finishing second. San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey was third, with Miami Dolphins stud Hill becoming the first receiver to top the list.

More remarkably, the top-3 ahead of Mahomes on the list - Hill, Jackson, and McCaffrey - were all defeated by the quarterback in the postseason. But his colleagues still gave the honor to Hill and spurned Mahomes.

When the list was coming out, a clip went viral of Cincinnati Bengals receiver Ja’Marr Chase talking about Mahomes being the No. 1 player in the NFL. The Bengals-Chiefs rivalry is fierce, and Chase refused to say the quarterback’s name when discussing the best players in the upcoming NFL campaign.

“He's good. He's amazing,” Chase said of Mahomes after refusing to say his name. “Not gonna lie, I'm salty, though. I'm a little salty. Two years in a row - I'm putting Burrow first.”

Regardless, Mahomes finished in the top 10 for the sixth straight year; Only Brady has more top-10 finishes (9).

But it will be little consolation for Mahomes, who will only use the ranking as fuel for the upcoming season as the Chiefs chase an unprecedented third-successive Super Bowl win. Along with the ranking snub, Mahomes can use the Las Vegas Raiders' decision to mock him as fuel for his internal fire.

During the offseason, Raiders players mocked Mahomes' voice, playing with a puppet and mocking his tone . Rather ominously, all Mahomes could tell reporters was: "It's still early in the year, stuff like that happens. It'll get handled when it gets handled."
