Kansas City Chiefs HC Andy Reid went without a fullback in his offense for the first time in his history as an NFL head coach in 2023. Even with the season resulting in a second consecutive Super Bowl title, that change might be short-lived.

Chiefs HC Andy Reid was asked about UDFA RB Carson Steele and just how tempting the rookie had made it to bring back the fullback position to the offense.

“(Carson) Steele is doing a nice job with that," Reid said. "He’s jumped in there and played fullback. He’s been banging it in there with what we ask him to do. He’s really not a fullback, but he can also do the other things but he’s a big kid and he wants to – he’s trying to make the team. He’s had some really good snaps for us. It’s been a surprise there.”

Now, Reid describes Steele as, "Really not a fullback. . ." Why is that? It's because Steele has proven to be a lot more than that, even while playing some fullback for Kansas City during training camp.

Where has Steele impressed during my time at Chiefs training camp?

Steele has proven to be able to do a lot of different things on offense in my brief three-day look at the Chiefs' training camp practices last week. He's taken some carries with the first-, second-, and third-team offense, aligned at the RB position. Those carries with the first-team offense came during Friday's practice behind both Isiah Pacheco and Deneric Prince. Yes, Steele has llined up to play fullback in a few short-yardage looks with another RB in the backfield. I distinctly remember one with Clyde Edwards-Helaire from Friday's practice. He's also lined up in some looks in more of a H-Back role on the wings.

Steele brings a lot of toughness as a runner, as evidenced by several practice repetitions where he was able to shrug off arm tackles. He also stood his own in the 1-on-1 LB/RB pass-blocking drills on Friday. It was the most impressive snap from anyone not named Isiah Pacheco, in my opinion.

Other Chiefs UDFA's who've caught my eye at training camp

Fabien Lovett has popped out a few times during team drills, showcasing a good blend of pass-rush skills and power. I found myself most impressed with his ability in 1-on-1 drills. He had a few repetitions against Hunter Nourzad that left me in awe during Thursday's practice session .

A name that Dave Toub recently mentioned is LB Swayze Bozeman and for good reason. Not only is he a multiphase special teamer, but he's making plays on defense. He put together a really nice practice on Friday. He had a strong repetition in coverage with a pass deflection that prevented a would-be touchdown. He also had a play against Emani Bailey on a blitz in pass protection that would've been a crime in 49 other states.

TE Baylor Cupp is a name to watch for the Chiefs as well. He's seen some opportunities to work with the first-team offense this past week, but his roles on special teams might be the reason he has a shot at the 53-man roster. He's one of the starting protectors on field goals and PATs. He also plays on kickoff coverage. You know who I didn't notice taking snaps in those roles? Irv Smith Jr.
