Kansas City Chiefs K Harrison Butker has officially signed a long-term contract extension that will keep him with the team through the 2028 NFL season. The team announced the deal on X just ahead of training camp practice on Wednesday.

Butker has received his fair share of criticism this offseason for comments made during a commencement address at Benedictine College. That hasn't taken away from what Butker has been able to accomplish on the field in Kansas City since joining the team back in 2017.

Speaking to reporters after practice Chiefs HC Andy Reid explained just what Butker has meant to the team.

"I mean, obviously a lot," Reid said. "He's been in huge situations for us, and really comes through, and his consistency has been great. You know, this won't bother him, because he's got that work ethic and he just sticks to it. It won't be a distraction at all. So listen, I'm happy for him, happy for the organization, and he's a heck of a football player, great kicker."

Just a season ago, Butker was perfect on extra points and made 33-of-35 field goal attempts. He's never missed a field goal from 30 yards or less during his NFL career. He holds several team records for a franchise that has seen no shortage of great kickers come through Arrowhead Stadium.

"I like the field goal kicker to have a little time under his belt, although we've done it both ways," Reid said. "But it's great to it's great to have the experience, and then at the level, the level of experience that he's had is like crazy. So he's done it in huge games for us."

Butker is one of the most accomplished postseason kickers in NFL history, with three Super Bowl rings, the most field goals made in Super Bowl history , and the longest field goal in Super Bowl history (57). His ability to be a safety net for the offense, even in the toughest of situations is something that gives star QB Patrick Mahomes a lot of comfort.

"Yeah, no, it's awesome," Mahomes said of Butker's contract extension. "I mean, for me, it's just getting in field goal range in some of these situations. Like at the end of the Super Bowl last year, and obviously we want to score a touchdown in that situation, but knowing that once we cross the 50 we're pretty much good to at least get to overtime. It's something that. you have to just rely on, and it's something that's just fun to have, honestly.

"I mean, knowing that you don't even have to worry, because I guys want to knock it through, and so I'm glad they were able to get the deal done and he can go out there and just kick field goals."

Butker is a big part of the success this team has seen over the past seven seasons, and having him in Kansas City for the long haul will only increase the chances this team remains atop the NFL's mountaintop.
