'It's Awesome!' Mahomes and Reid Speak Out On Butker

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has his critics, and they have a right to their opinion.

But the standout performer also has his teammates, and they are a right to their opinion, too.

"It's awesome," QB Patrick Mahomes said of Butker's contract extension. "For me, it's just getting in field-goal range in some of these situations. Like at the end of the Super Bowl last year, and ... knowing that once we cross the 50 we're pretty much good to at least get to overtime.

"It's something that. you have to just rely on, and it's something that's just fun to have, honestly.''

Butker officially signed a long-term contract extension this week in the face of criticism for his controversial comments made during a commencement address at Benedictine College.

But that's not football. This is.

"Obviously a lot," coach Andy Reid said when asked what it means to have Butker in his employ. "He's been in huge situations for us, and really comes through, and his consistency has been great.

And will the deal (or the criticism) change him?

"You know, this won't bother him, because he's got that work ethic and he just sticks to it,'' Reid said. "It won't be a distraction at all. So listen, I'm happy for him, happy for the organization, and he's a heck of a football player, great kicker."

Last season on the way to another Super Bowl win, Butker was perfect on extra points and made 33-of-35 field goal attempts.

"It's knowing that you don't even have to worry, because I guys want to knock it through,'' Mahomes said, "and so I'm glad they were able to get the deal done and he can go out there and just kick field goals."
