"We could bury every hatchet, but we can't pull up the roots..." I just love that line. Today, Koe Wetzel released the music video for "Hatchet," which was included on his new album 9 Lives that came out last Friday. A bit of a different feel and sound for the Texas rocker, the song was written by producer Gabe Simon along with Mike Coogan, and finds Koe reflecting on a former flame and hoping there's some way they can rekindle their romance and "bury the hatchet" for good and start over no matter what happened between them in the past. It's a very well-written, catchy song with an interesting melody that will get stuck in your head from the first listen, and is certainly a softer, more understated take on relationships and who is at fault for what than anything I've ever heard from Koe before, which is part of what makes it such a standout:
"Sit down at the table, the tension in the air You all dressed in silence while my mind runs here and there Scared to break the standstill we need some kind of truce We could bury every hatchet but we can't pull up the roots And maybe it'll be okay but we can't pray this all away How we gonna stop the rain and bring on back them summer days We got no idea what the future has in store Maybe love-stained tears is the best we can hope for But I can't change your mind, wishin' I could take it back We could bury every hatchet but we can't bury the past"
The video itself is pretty simple too, which shows Koe in his living room, playing his acoustic guitar shirtless with some whiskey strumming the song. It flashes back and forth between him and a couple that seemingly has love for one another, but can't quite figure out how to make it work in a long-term relationship. Like the song, it's a bit more understated than what we're used to getting from him, but I find it refreshing and intriguing, and "Hatchet" is easily one of my favorites from the new album.
