Chance Williams caught a large quillback carpsucker that measured 22 inches and weighed eight pounds, topping the previous record by one pound, seven ounces on March 2.

“When I shot the fish, I thought it was a small buffalo, but to my surprise, it was a very large quillback,” Williams said.

Williams’ catch was a state record for unrestricted tackle (not using a rod and reel) and topped the previous record set by Caleb Broeker.

AGFC said Broeker and Willams know each other and a friendly rivalry for the next state record has likely started.

The quillback caught by Williams is one of several state records set on Bull Shoals Lake. Other current records include smallmouth bass, American eel and spotted bass.
