LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – A new nonprofit called Fostering Friendships is doing just that for a group of struggling kids and teens in the Little Rock community.

For Jackson Jones, his senior year includes something a little extra: giving back to the community, with a focus on kids in central Arkansas who come from various walks of life.

“Our goal is just to build friendships because I believe everybody needs a friend,” Jones said.

He and a group of friends spent Wednesday afternoon at The Centers residential program for kids ages 5-12 playing games and giving out school supplies.

Foundation Director Jamie Higgins said some of the kids are in foster care or come from homes of abuse, and others struggle with thoughts of suicide or deal with anxiety or depression. The Centers is also the state’s only source of residential care for victims of human trafficking who are minors.

Because of that, KARK 4 News was unable to show any of the kids on camera, but just a peek into what Jones and his friends do will touch your heart.

“Seeing that other people in the community really have a vested interest in their wellbeing does a really great service for their wellbeing and their mental health,” Higgins said.

Jones said the benefits of the friendships he builds with these kids go both ways. Part of his mission in starting the nonprofit was based on what research shows: friendships are good for everyone, physically and mentally.

“It’s really transformed my life,” he said. “I feel happier. I feel less anxious and I’m so grateful for what this has given to me.”
