Hundreds of kids are waiting in foster care hoping to be adopted. We at KARK are hoping to help these kids find loving homes through our Wednesday’s Child Series.

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Being a teenager can be confusing. Being a teenager in foster care only adds to that confusion.

One young man currently in the system is hoping to find some clarity and stability with a family of his own.

Just like a basketball, 15-year-old Skylar has bounced around a lot.

“I was born and raised in Missouri, moved to Arkansas when I was 7 moved, back to Missouri for a year [and] came back when I was 8,” Skylar said.

His unstable home life has led to an uncertain future.

“My mom is in jail, in and out jail, and my dad has been trying to get custody of me for a while, but I don’t know if that’s ever going to happen,” Skylar said.

Skylar has spent the last several years in foster care, at times caught stepping out of bounds.

“I started to get into legal trouble,” Skylar said. “I got arrested a few times, but I’ve changed my ways now,” Skylar said.

Adoption specialist Hailey Mooneyhan said for Skylar, the right support group is essential.

“He tends to follow kids, to be a follower. But I think if he had the right family to show him love and support, he wouldn’t be a troubled kid,” Mooneyhan said.

Skylar said he also needs a mom and dad who know the importance of a time-out.

“I’d like for them to let me have my own personal space when I need it. A basketball hoop outside, or take me out places to play basketball,” Skylar said.

For now, he sits hoping and waiting for someone to give him a shot.

“At first I didn’t want a family, but now I’m like, I want a family because I don’t want to be in DHS custody forever,” Skylar said.
