Obon Festival held to commemorate the Lahaina Fires
Red lanterns flutter in the air. As does an overwhelming spirit of love, hope and community. One year after their temples burned down, Lahaina’s three Buddhist missions put on an Obon festival with Taiko drumming, dance circles and local food trucks. While Obon festivals are typically hosted on temple grounds, the Saturday night event took place at the Lahaina Cannery Mall and was the first time Lahaina’s three temples — the Lahaina Jodo Mission, Lahaina Hongwanji and Lahaina Shingon Mission — joined forces for the celebration.

Statehood Day holiday schedule for City and County of Honolulu operations
HONOLULU (Island News) -- The City and County of Honolulu announced the holiday schedule for Statehood Day for several operations on Friday, Aug. 16, 2024. In observation of Statehood Day, the City and County offices will be closed on Friday. These are the following services scheduled to be operating for Honolulu that day:
West Maui hotels donate to Lahaina tribute quilt, honor first responders, reflect on one year since wildfires
In honor of the Maui wildfire remembrance of Aug. 8, The Westin Nanea Ocean Villas installed a Kapa Kuiki Quilt, in their hotel lobby. The 16 panels that make up the quilt, tell stories of the history of Lahaina in a design by artists of ʻohana o Pūnana Leo o Maui. The Westin Nanea obtained the Lahaina tribute quilt in an auction at the most recent Ho‘omau event and installed the piece of symbolism for public display on the one-year anniversary of the Maui wildfires.
