Saginaw Township woman pleads to reckless driving in death of 2 motorcyclists
SAGINAW, MI — Eight months after an SUV-motorcycle crash in rural Saginaw County claimed the lives of two people, a woman has pleaded to causing the collision. Jenna E. Vargas, 22, on the morning of July 23 appeared before Saginaw County District Judge Terry L. Clark and pleaded guilty to one count of reckless driving. The charge is a 93-day misdemeanor.
Rededication held for Monitor Twp. park
MONITOR TWP., Mich. (WNEM) - After closing for a remodel last December, a mid-Michigan park held a special rededication and ribbon cutting Tuesday afternoon, July 23. Monitor Township’s Herbert W. Steih Memorial Park closed last December for a nearly $570,000 remodel that gave the park a whole new look and better access to the Kawkawlin River.

Great Lakes whitefish struggle to survive as ice cover melts away
BRIMLEY, MI — Jason Smith and Simon Freeman dragged a long green seine net through the Whitefish Bay shallows and began to survey their catch. Sifting through the net, the two Bay Mills tribal biologists picked out multiple small silvery minnows; juvenile whitefish sheltering in the shallows. In 50 feet of beach, they found about 30 fish — good numbers that reflect a stable Lake Superior population.

Forecast turning towards dry weather after isolated showers today
SAGINAW, Mich. (WNEM) - Showers remain in the forecast today, but coverage is expected to be quite limited as of this point. With how quick the low has passed by and with our area already behind the cold front, we don’t have much in the way or forcing or a good driver for widespread showers. The heating of the day is expected to allow some showers to develop in the afternoon, but the coverage just looks isolated.
