ORANGE CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A “never-before-seen” variety of tulip has been officially revealed by an Orange City nonprofit.

Dutch Heritage Boosters announced their new, exclusive to Orange City, variety of tulip.

“The Dutch love their tulips, and the Dutch traditions in Orange City include the celebrated bloom as an important component in the community,” Dutch Heritage Boosters said in their announcement.

The tulip variety is being called Oranjestad DHB , or Orange City DHB (Dutch Heritage Boosters) in English. Dutch Heritage Boosters said they chose the name to honor Orange City and reflect the community’s love for the flower and Dutch tradition.

“The Oranjestad DHB is a Darwin hybrid and later-blooming tulip with generous blossoms opening in soft apricot tones and maturing into a blend of orange and yellow hues. The sturdy stems grow to a height of 22 inches,” the release said.

The idea of growing a variety of tulip to represent Orange City came about when the Consul General of The Kingdom of The Netherlands Bart Twaalfhoven visited Orange City in 2023, Dutch Heritage Boosters said in their release. The Consul General connected the group with a bulb grower in The Netherlands.

“We are honored to be part of this historic opportunity to bring a never-before-seen tulip to our community and honor our town’s early citizens who invested in the planting of bulbs even when the community was brand new,” said DHB vice president and tulip project lead Randy Van Peursem.

The tulip bulbs will be planted in Orange City in the Fall of 2024 and will be ready for viewing by the Tulip Festival in 2025.

“We are working with Orange City’s park system to plant in community parks, and on the DHB properties, as well as our tulip garden, so there will be multiple ways for people to enjoy the beauty of this remarkable tulip,” said the owner of Tulip Town Bulb Company Keri Drescher. Tulip Town Bulb Company will be distributing the bulbs.

The bulbs will be available for preorder beginning this spring through Tulip Town Bulb Company in time for fall planting.
