NEWELL, Iowa (KCAU) – The next stop on our Two-A-Days tour brings us to Newell-Fonda as the Mustangs are looking to rebound and use a year of learning to compete in 2024.

Newell-Fonda finished the year with a 3-5 record, its fewest wins in a season since 2009. The 3-5 mark also snapped its streak of 13 consecutive seasons over .500. Despite losing 21 of the team’s 29 touchdowns on offense with the graduation of Trenton Struss and Ty Tauber, the ‘Stangs return the team’s lead returning rusher and tackler in QB Max Carlson, who looks to take another step up as the team’s signal-caller.

Gaining another year of experience under its belt, the Newell-Fonda Mustangs aim to use those lessons to good use in 2024.

“We’ve got to win the games we’re supposed to win and if we can steal a couple…we’ve got a tough district and a tough schedule, but I think these guys can get the job done and try and get better every day.” Newell-Fonda head coach Nathan Baron said. “We’ve got some young guys ready to step up and take those positions. They’ll get better. They’re young, but they’re going to get better every day and that’s all I can ask for.”

The Mustangs begin the season at home against West Bend-Mallard. Newell-Fonda has had success against the Wolverines as they’ve won 12 of the last 15 matchups. This is the fourth consecutive the Mustangs will play the Wolverines to open the season.
