SLOAN, Iowa (KCAU) – Our next Two-A-Days segment features the Westwood Rebels.

Westwood, who is coming off its third consecutive 4-5 season, remains in search of its first season above .500 since 2019. Westwood head coach Cass Burkhart will have plenty to replace, including three of its top four receivers. The Rebels return just one receiving touchdown from a year ago. Additionally, it’ll be a reloaded Westwood team on defense, who lost five of its top six tacklers.

The Rebels prioritized its runs game last year and will look to do the same with Tatum Cooper and Joe Morris. The rising seniors combined for over 1,100 rush yards and 7 TD’s on the ground. A good run game stems from a good line, which has been a focal point for the Rebels in the offseason.

“It’s exciting and we’re ready to go. But for us, it’s about playing physical, fast, and free. Keeping things simple for the kids so they can fly around and make plays. At the end of the day, high school football is won at the line of scrimmage.” Burkhart said. If you can run the ball and stop the run, you’ve probably got a good chance to win football games. We’re really going to focus on that this offseason and spend a lot of time tackling in practice and spend a lot of time blocking.”

Westwood opens the season at MVAOCOU at 7 p.m. on August 30th. The series between the Rebels and Rams is 6-5 in favor of Westwood, dating back to 2010. Westwood has won the last five meetings.
