    Construction to begin on quiet zone in downtown Sioux City

    SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — An improvements project will begin construction at a quiet zone downtown starting Monday, Aug. 19.

    According to the City of Sioux City Engineering Division, the project involves the building of raised medians north and south of the BNSF railroad crossings on Court Street and Virginia Street. It’s expected to be finished within 20 working days.

    Traffic will be limited to one lane in each direction during construction. Additionally, Court Street may sometimes be restricted to one lane of alternating traffic with a flagger.

    The project was awarded to Mark Albenesius, Inc. on July 8 and was given a budget of $65,955.

    According to the Federal Railroad Administration , a quiet zone is a stretch of railroad where train horns are not allowed to be routinely sounded.
