SIOUX CITY, Iowa ( KCAU ) — Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley has announced that Western Iowa Tech is among four colleges to receive federal grants to expand their commercial driver’s license (CDL) training programs.

According to a release, a total of $509,775 was awarded to four community colleges across Iowa, with WITCC receiving $131,000.

“Improving pathways for eligible individuals to secure commercial driver’s licenses is a simple way we can boost the economy,” Grassley said. “These resources will unlock good-paying jobs, address labor shortages in the trucking industry, and streamline supply chain operations. I’ve seen firsthand the efficacy of commercial driver’s license programs in Iowa and am confident our community colleges will use this federal investment to build on their proven successes.”

The release noted that this comes after Grassley met with Hawkeye Community College students who were earning their commercial driving credentials in 2021. Grassley set out to bolster the Iowa trucking workforce by encouraging the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to allow individuals 18 or older to qualify for CDLs.
