SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — There’s an investigation at Smithfield Foods after a worker was injured in Sioux Falls.

A representative of the U.S. Department of Labor has confirmed the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation into the Smithfield meatpacking plant in Sioux Falls. An active complaint on the OSHA website is dated August 20, 2024.

Smithfield’s spokesman, Ray Atkinson, said an employee at the Sioux Falls facility was injured in a work-related incident.

“We are investigating and are cooperating with local authorities and OSHA,” Atkinson said.

According to the Dept. of Labor spokesman, OSHA has a 6-month window to complete its investigation. No additional information will come from them until that point.
