DALLAS (KDAF) — Texas’ Tax Free Weekend is coming up on August 9-11, and Nextdoor has some new insights exploring family attitudes, approaches, and thoughts toward this year’s back-to-school activities.

The survey found that while 78% of parents are excited for their kids to return to the classroom, the shopping may be less of a thrill:

    • Parents expect to spend $984, with the bulk of the budget going to clothing, followed by electronics
    • 69% of respondents expect to spend more this year
    • 62% plan to shop at thrift stores, garage sales or online marketplaces to stretch their dollars

Interestingly, just as more neighbors are planning to lean into thrifting and gently used items for their needs, neighbors are strategically making plans to offset this year’s spending with:

    • Nearly two-thirds of respondents expect to list items on Nextdoor’s For Sale & Free section to help offset back-to-school shopping cost

Additionally, taking a look at Nextdoor’s For Sale & Free section across the DFW  neighbors will find great back-to-school items ranging from backpacks and lunch boxes, to sporting equipment like catcher’s mitts and bicycles, and learning aids like laptops, calculators and books.
