It was a stunning night with northern lights and a meteor shower visible in the Pittsburgh area.

People reported seeing the northern lights in numerous locations including Butler, Washington and Armstrong Counties, a rare occurrence in Pennsylvania.

It is the second time they've been clearly visible this year.

And, AccuWeather meteorologist Joe Lundberg says there may be an encore presentation tonight.

“It’s possible you can see both of them tonight,” said Lundberg. There will be some clouds in the area overnight into Tuesday, so you may need to be patient.

While the peak of the Perseids meteor shower was Sunday into Monday, there will still be meteors streaking across the sky.

A strong geomagnetic storm (caused by solar winds) has pushed the Aurora Borealis farther south.

NOAA and the National Weather Service say the current geomagnetic storm is at a “4” on a scale of 1 to 5 when it comes to severity.

“X” user xxkenzii , a Twitch streamer, captured an amazing photo of the northern lights and a meteor at the same time.

She tells KDKA Radio, “was very happy to see it in person and jaw dropped the whole time.”
