Former Averett University basketball player killed in crash
FAYETTEVILLE, NC (WDBJ) - A recently-graduated basketball player at Averett University has been killed in a crash, according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol. Jamael Carter, Jr. of Fayetteville, NC, a member of the Averett class of ‘24, was a four-year member of the Cougars team and leader on campus, says the university, which issued this statement:

Otterbots win key home games, remain in first place
The Danville Otterbots maintained their lead in the Appalachian State’s Eastern Division this past week, as the local club won a pair of home games at the Danville Athletic Park against one of their biggest divisional competitors, the Burlington Sock Puppets. Then the Otterbots won a home game Saturday night against the Johnson City Doughboys before closing out the week with an 8-6 victory on Sunday to complete a series sweep.
Local racer to compete in national motocross championship
Ryder Shumate, 7, of Chatham, qualified for the largest amateur motocross race in the world, the 43rd Annual Monster Energy AMA Amateur National Motocross Championship, presented by AMSOIL.
