As Illinois communities prepare to celebrate Juneteenth on June 19th, which commemorates the end of slavery in 1865, there are a variety of events and festivities planned.
One of the biggest events in Chicago is the Juneteenth Village Fest held on June 15th at Douglass Park. This free family festival organized by It Takes a Village Family of Schools will feature live performances by renowned artists like Common, Dead Prez, and Domani, along with rides, games, food vendors, and more.
Another major Chicago celebration is the 1865 Fest, a three-day event from June 14-16 in Garfield Park. Although the flag-raising ceremony on June 14th is exclusive to invitees, the general public can participate in youth activities, dance battles, musical performances, and a Father's Day cook-off on the next two days.
The 4th annual Juneteenth celebration in Bronzeville will take place on June 15th, featuring performances, activities, and vendors on the 3500 block of South King Drive. Also on the same day, the African American Awareness & Appreciation Parade will proceed down Madison Street, followed by a festival at Garfield Park.
Additional Chicago events to look out for are the Juneteenth Family Festival in Beverly/Morgan Park on June 15th, the Accessible Juneteenth celebration at UIC on June 18th, and the DuSable Museum's Juneteenth event on June 19th, which will showcase exhibits, performances, and a NASCAR pit crew demonstration.
Outside of Chicago, Aurora will hold its 23rd annual Juneteenth Freedom and Heritage Celebration on June 15th at Martin Luther King Park, featuring live music, educational activities, and talent shows. Additionally, Aurora will reveal a new mural paying tribute to Black blues artists on June 18th and organize a Juneteenth Youth Summit on June 19th.
The Springfield Black Chamber of Commerce will organize several events for the 30th annual Juneteenth Celebration starting on June 15th in Springfield.
