Lee Anderson owns A Homestead Brew. He’s been making beer for 12 years, and tonight will play the role of professor at beer school.

“It’s just a good way of spreading knowledge of different ingredients we’re using, seasonal beers that come up with like-minded people. It’s a lot of fun,” A Homestead Brew owner Lee Anderson said.

The class takes place at The Upper Room in Brandon, with a new teacher each month covering a variety of topics.

“I really like focusing farm first, talking about all the new stuff coming up in spring, the plants budding, my raspberries and blackberries just starting to show, so I’ll really focus on the farm,” Anderson said.

“It’s cool to see where local beers are brewed, how they’re done. Lee makes a good, quality beer with local products and it actually tastes good at the end, that’s a perfect combination,” part-time bartender Jordan Scott said.

Jordan Scott is a farmer and part-time bartender at A Homestead Brew, but admits he knows more about drinking beer than brewing it.

“Going to a beer school, learning how it’s done, what products are used, the process it takes to make some beer is pretty interesting,” Scott said.

It’s only a 90-minute session, but Anderson hopes his students walk away with a better appreciation for beer and are willing to try something new.

“Barley wine or a new IPA or an interesting sour, or maybe a new love of a new ingredient, maybe learning about a specific hop or a new fruit that’s come out that people are using,” Anderson said.

    The options are endless.

Beer school starts at 7:00 tonight (Tuesday) at The Upper Room in Brandon. The price tag is $20, with $5 going to the Brandon Food Pantry.
