MITCHELL, S.D. (KELO) — Wessington Springs used two big innings on Wednesday to claim a 10-7 win over Akron, kicking off the 2024 Amateur Baseball State Tournament.

The Owls plated three runs in the first to take the lead.

That lead held up until the fourth when Akron scored five runs to take the lead. They’d add on and make it a 6-3 lead.

However, Wessington Springs had one more big inning left in their tank. The Owls scored six runs in the sixth to grab the lead back at 9-6. They’d hold on for the 10-7 win.

Wessington Springs was outhit 11-9 in the win. However, they took advantage of three untimely errors, giving the Owls nine unearned runs.

The Owls will play Larchwood in the second round of the state tournament on Sunday night.
