KENILWORTH, NJ - After 23 years of being at the helm of the David Brearley Softball Program, Head Coach Amy Efchak has decided to step down.
During her time as head coach for the Bears for 23 years, Amy helped to bring the Bears to win the states in 2005 and 2006, conference in 2004 and 2021, and county in 2005. On May 10, 2023, Amy hit another milestone, when her varsity girls’ softball team defeated the Johnson Crusaders 3-2, at home for Amy's 250th win with the program. Her immense enthusiasm for education and hard work has not been unnoticed. Not only has Amy been a recipient of the Teacher of the Year once, she has received this recognition THREE times and in 2005 and this 2024, she was named the Union County Coach of the year.
“It has been an amazing ride for me" Amy said. "I can remember my first win for the team back in the day and all of the outstanding accomplishments and student athletes that have passed through. Brearley softball is what I consider family and Kenilworth is my home. So much love and trust was used to create this program and I could not have done it without my coaches, especially Nichole Spampinato, Tanya Spmapinato, Kristen Meager, Jenna Vitale, Michele Alvarez and all that have helped over the years. The players and their families and the Kenilworth School District. I loved Softball my whole life, but Brearley Softball has changed my life and I will never forget it. It will be forever etched in my heart."
Truly dedicated to all her students and team members, Amy will be deeply missed out on the field. Luckily for David Brearley Middle High School, she is not done teaching and will continue to inspire students daily.
To honor Amy's retirement, a celebration will be held at Kenilworth's Two Ton Brewing located at 730 Federal Avenue on Thursday, July 25, from 4 p.m. until 9 p.m. Amy hopes many former students, friends, co-workers, and parents can come out to this joyful event. She also asks you to bring any old photos or share a favorite story.
Congratulations Amy! You have made a difference in so many lives and deserve all the best.
