KENNER, La. ( WGNO ) — The Kenner Police Department is participating in the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over Campaign ahead of the Fourth of July holiday.

KPD officials said the campaign will run from July 3 through July 7 and combine increased public awareness with increased visibility and enforcement to target drunk drivers and prevent drunk driving.

According to the KPD, “almost 37 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes” every day.

KPD officials said a DWI arrest can lead to jail time, loss of license and financial expenses.

Ahead of the campaign, KPD officials offered the following tips to prevent drunk driving:

    • Have plan get home safely before leaving.
    • Have a designated sober driver before drinking.
    • Contact the KPD if you see a drunk driver on the road.
    • “If you’re impaired, use a taxi or rideshare service, call a sober friend or family member, or use public transportation.”
    • “If you know someone who is about to drive or ride while impaired, take your friend’s keys and help your friend make other arrangements to get where he or she is going safely.

“If you choose to head out on the Fourth of July and make the terrible decision to drink and drive, don’t be mistaken—if you get caught, you will be arrested,” said Kenner Chief of Police Keith Conley.
