Fire crews respond to vegetation fire in Kennewick Saturday morning, NWS Pendleton issues warning

    By Erin Wencl,

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Fire crews from Kennewick and Benton County responded early Saturday morning to a fire along SR 397 and East 10th Avenue.

The calls on the fire came in just before 7 a.m.

While the fire was brought under control quickly, crews spent nearly two hours at the scene, making sure to mop up hot spots.

At 5 a.m. on Saturday, the National Weather Service - Pendleton issued an urgent fire weather message for the Columbia Basin and southeast Oregon.

This weekend, the region is expected to have hot, dry, breezy and unstable conditions. This means the possibility of fire is high and with the conditions, it can spread rapidly.

A Fire Weather Watch will be in effect Sunday afternoon through Sunday evening. In the Kittitas Valley, thunderstorms with lightning strikes could be a factor in fire possibilities.

The NWS issues a Fire Weather Watch when critical fire weather conditions are forecasted. The combination of wind and low relative humidity makes the conditions unstable, which leads to extreme fire behavior.
