KENNEWICK, Wash. -- The Kennewick Fire Department put out a fire at the Governor's Square Duplexes Friday evening.

Fire officials said fire crews responded to the call for help just before 6:30 p.m. Friday in the 3700 Block of West 6th Avenue.

Fire officials said initial calls to 9-1-1 said a bedroom was on fire and the occupants tried to use a fire extinguisher.

According to officials, occupants made it out of the home. When firefighters arrived to the scene, heavy smoke and flames were seen coming out of a window on the back of the home.

Fire officials said fire crews from Benton County Fire District 1, Richland Fire & Emergency Service, the Pasco Fire Department and police from the Kennewick Police Department assisted Kennewick Fire. Benton PUD also responded to de-energize the property.

Officials said fire crews focused on dousing the fire coming from the window to stop the spread to the outside of the house.

Firefighters said other crews entered the home to begin dousing the bedroom where the fire may have started.

Fire crews were able to put out the fire within 11 minutes after the first crew got on scene.

Officials said fire crews searched for fire behind the walls, in the ceiling and in void spaces by removing drywall.

Fire officials said the second unit of the duplex did not get damaged and was able to remain habitable.

    No one was hurt.

The cause is still under investigation and fire officials said the Red Cross is providing the occupants assistance since the unit was deemed uninhabitable.
