Mitch McConnell faced a chorus of boos on the opening day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee.

As the Senate GOP leader cast Kentucky’s 46 votes in favor of Donald Trump’s nomination for president Monday, the Fiserv Forum arena burst into audible condemnation.

Though he has endorsed Trump for president, McConnell is seen as a political adversary by many in the MAGA movement and remains one of the most unpopular politicians in the country.

McConnell and Trump have had a troubled relationship, but McConnell will go down in history as being a crucial catalyst for Trump’s first term agenda. The Kentuckian helped shepherd three Trump Supreme Court nominees through thorny Senate confirmation hearings.

McConnell also ushered through the confirmation of Aileen Cannon, the federal judge who on Monday dismissed the classified documents case against Trump.

“The commonwealth of Kentucky proudly casts 46 votes for the next president, Donald J. Trump,” McConnell said from the floor over jeers.

McConnell is chairman of the Kentucky GOP delegation in Milwaukee but isn’t expected to have a prominent role in the rest of the convention, which will feature Trump’s most loyal lieutenants and acolytes.

Earlier, McConnell heaped praise on Trump at a Kentucky GOP delegation event attended by his wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao and Congressman Andy Barr.

“We’re not going to let this kind of hatred redefine this country,” McConnell said of Saturday’s attempted assassination of Trump. “How about that fist pump on the way up!”
