18 people were taken to the hospital as a precaution after reports of a "chemical" odor at Bobby Duke Middle School in Coachella left several students and people on campus feeling ill.

The report first came in around 11:15 a.m., prompting Cal Fire to issue a full response from their hazmat materials team.

Prior to CAL FIRE's arrival, school officials turned off the gas, officials said.

24 classrooms were isolated to determine the cause of the smell, which still remains unknown.

The hazardous materials team made entry and was unable to detect any leaks, CAL FIRE officials said.

The incident was turned over to SoCalGas. A spokesperson with SoCalGas confirmed that their crews conducted a leak investigation and found no gas leak. Crews also confirmed the integrity of the houseline.

"The odor was not related to natural gas service"

The school returned in session for the day, however, parents were able to pick up their children if they wished to do so.

Coachella Valley Unified School District officials shared part of an email with our newsroom that was sent to all school staff this afternoon.

It read in part, "The fire department and the gas company checked the premises confirming no gas leaks or chemical spills."

We also heard from Desert Care Network officials who shared that a portion of the students treated were taken to JFK Memorial Hospital.

The scene was cleared by 2:00 PM
