TYLER, Texas ( KETK ) — A Texas committee has subpoenaed major tech companies to release documents as part of an investigation into potential election interference.

The Texas Senate Committee on State Affairs’ chairman Sen. Bryan Hughes (R-Tyler) was authorized to issue subpoenas to Meta (Facebook), Alphabet Inc. (Google), TikTok and X (formerly known as Twitter) after whistleblowers’ “shocking testimony.”

According to the letter, the committee’s May 29 hearing featured sworn testimony from Facebook and Google whistleblowers on the role of Big Tech in swaying elections.

Ryan Hartwig, a Facebook whistleblower, spoke of the company’s supposed biasness:

“Big Tech firms have immense power to influence elections, and Texans deserve to know how this power is being used. It’s well known that these companies censor the free speech of everyday Americans, and Texas has taken bold action to deal with Big Tech censorship. But their ability to sway elections has got to be addressed. If these companies decide not to comply with our requests for documents, we will be issuing subpoenas. Texas is serious about election integrity.”

    Sen. Bryan Hughes

The subpoenas will reportedly require any employee, agent or representative from the four companies to appear before the committee at the time and location specified in the subpoena to testify on any records required by the committee for inspection.
