Man bitten by shark off Key West

An adult man was reportedly bitten by a shark at approximately 3:40 p.m. Monday, July 15, while spearfishing on a reef off of Key West.

The man was taken by Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Trauma Star helicopter to Jackson South Medical Center in Miami-Dade County after he was brought ashore on Stock Island shortly after being bitten, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Adam Linhardt said in a news release.

The victim reportedly was alert and responsive at the time of the airlift. His immediate condition was not clear as of Monday evening, Linhardt said.

Monroe County government spokeswoman Kristen Livengood, who spoke on behalf of county’s Emergency Medical Services, said the man, 37, had “injuries to his calf, chest and chin.”
