Investigators are trying to determine what led to the yacht Lovebug sinking over the weekend in Maryland. She ended up sinking, after nearby vessels rescued her passengers. According to AIS data, and confirmed by the U.S. Coast Guard, the 122-footer (38-meter) had departed Annapolis the morning of July 27. Around midday, personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard Station Annapolis responded to a MAYDAY from the captain. Upon arriving on the scene in the West River, south of Annapolis, they discovered the yacht Lovebug severely listing and aground. Additionally, all five people aboard were rescued without injury thanks to two other vessels. One was a TowBoatUS vessel, while the other was a tour-boat operator.

A superyacht capsized in the Chesapeake Bay near Washington, DC, forcing passengers to plunge into the water as it sank — and prompting a dramatic rescue, authorities said.

The splashy, 122-foot vessel, known as the Lovebug, began taking on water around 12:30 p.m. Saturday near Edgewater, Maryland, police and witnesses told CBS Baltimore.



Striking footage shows the $8 million superyacht — which docks at the Annapolis Yacht Club and costs $125,000 to charter per week — sinking on its side in a heavily traveled area near the mouth of the West River.

On Tuesday, a whale struck and swamped a fishing boat off the coast of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, sending two fishermen into the water. The whale breached the surface just feet from the boat's stern, and it landed with its head on the port-side outboard engine and the boat's transom. The fiberglass boat - far lighter than the whale - immediately flipped to port and dumped the two occupants into the water.
