MIDWEST CITY, Okla. ( KFOR ) – A kitchen fire sent a Midwest City home up in flames Wednesday morning and one woman is being treated for smoke inhalation after trying to save her pets.

“The kitchen definitely is completely burned up, but the rest of the house is fairly decent,” Chief David Richardson with the Midwest City Police Department said.

That’s a little bit of good news coming out of a horrible situation starting around 8 a.m. Richardson said neighbors heard smoke alarms coming from a home nearby and called 911.

“The occupant was not home at the time,” Richardson said.

Richardson said a woman was taking her kids to school and by the time they responded, she was home and trying to save her dogs inside.

“Two pets did not make it,” Richardson said.

At the time, the fire was coming out of the front of the attic area. They were able to get her out and treat her for light smoke inhalation as a precaution.

“It looks like the origin of the fire was in the kitchen, what caused it specifically at this time, we don’t know,” Richardson said.

No one else was home except the pets. Richardson said thankfully, the smoke alarms prevented things from being any worse.

“Got us here quick to minimize, I think, the damage done,” he said. “It won’t be a total loss for them.”

Richardson also mentioned the weather as helping them fight the fire as clouds protect firefighters from extreme heat.
