NORMAN, Okla. ( KFOR ) — The Norman Police Department has detained a person of interest in connection to a shooting Friday that sent one person to the hospital.

The shooting happened near E Imhoff Road and 24th Avenue SE with police responding shortly Friday afternoon.

When officers arrived, a Norman Police spokesperson says they found one person with multiple gunshot wounds.

“We don’t know how they’re doing at this time,” said Sarah Schettler with the Norman Police Department.

The situation was intense for some residents in the area, with authorities initially sharing on social media for people to stay out of the area; and that a suspect was at large.

“I just made sure all my windows and doors were locked and started watching the news to try to figure out what was going on,” said Ashley Wardlow, who lives in the area. “It was really scary.”

Police also say nearby schools were impacted by the suspect search.

“Due to initial reports that the suspect had left the area and could have been armed we did as a precaution, precautionary measure, put the neighboring schools on a lock out,” said Schettler.

Wardlow said her daughter’s school was not impacted, but safety concerns left her waiting for her at the bus stop a little bit longer than usual to make sure she made it home safe.

“I’ll just let her know, you know, in the best way that I can, that, you know, something really bad happened and we’re safe now,” said Wardlow.

As of Friday night police had not shared any additional information about potential arrests or provided an update on the victim’s condition.
