OKLAHOMA CITY ( KFOR ) — A beautiful day in Oklahoma with great weather surrounded an even greater cause Saturday in a Clear the Shelters event that highlighted horse adoptions as well as dogs and cats that are looking for their forever homes.

A Clear The Shelters horse adoption was held at OKC Animal Welfare which featured horse rescue organizations like Horse and Hound and Nexus Equine .

CLEAR THE SHELTERS: Dogs, cats, and horses will be up for adoption at a special event

“So this event is to help bring information and bring the people to the fact that we have not only dogs and cats in dire need of finding forever homes, but also horses,” said Allson Anderson, volunteer for Horse and Hound Rescue. “So this is a great opportunity for people to come out. We have a binder of all of our adoptable horse.”

Oklahoma carries a large horse population, and just like dogs and cats, they also get taken in and put up for adoption to find their next home.

Not only did Oklahomans come out this weekend looking to adopt a horse of their own, but those from out-of-state even traveled to adopt these amazing animals.

CLEAR THE SHELTERS: KFOR hosts Clear the Shelters, helping animals find forever homes

“We came up from Mineral Wells, Texas. I’ve been looking on the my horse website for some time. And just found these two little babies, and I felt like it was a just a good fit,” said Sophia Kimble, who adopted two horses on Saturday.

“It’s a bigger responsibility than adopting a cat or dog, but certainly is very, very rewarding,” said Edgar Diaz, who also adopted a horse. “They take a lot of time, but they give a lot of love back.”

Horse’s can be a big responsibility and require proper care just like any other animal, even dogs and cats. For those who love horses and can’t decide on whether or not to adopt one, a fellow horse lover has some blunt advice for those considering adopting one.

“Get off your rear and come and do it,” said Fay Tate.

All five horses that Nexus Equine brought out to Saturday’s ‘Clear the Shelters’ equine event were adopted.

Not only were horses up for adoption today for the event, but also dogs and cats who also need to find their special homes.

“So if you didn’t come adopt today, come see us next week. We’ll still have plenty that can be adopted at that point,” says Krystal Slocum, administrative specialist, OKC Animal Welfare.

Plenty of animals are still looking to be adopted to their forever homes so for those who missed Saturday’s event, keep checking local animal shelters participating in Clear the Shelters .
