    County to host household hazardous waste drop-off events in April

    BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County Public Works is hosting several events in April for residents to drop off unwanted household cleaners and chemicals and other hazardous products.

    Public Works officials said the events are scheduled to take place April 5 and April 6 in Tehachapi, April 12 in Kern Valley, and April 20 in California City. All events are scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    The county said there is no fee to drop off these unwanted items at a scheduled event.

    See below for a schedule and locations:

    • April 5-6: Tehachapi Recycling & Sanitary Landfill – 12001 Tehachapi Blvd – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • April 12: Kern Valley Transfer Station – 6092 Wulstein Ave. – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
    • April 20: California City – 22636 Airport Way – 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

    Officials ask that when taking hazardous household waste to a location, that you follow guidelines for safely transporting waste: No transporting of more than 15 gallons or 125 pounds per trip and no container should be more than 5 gallons, make sure containers are not leaking and are properly labeled.

    What items can be dropped off?

    • Household cleaners
    • Deodorizers
    • Personal hygiene products
    • Pesticides
    • Batteries (home or auto)
    • Fluorescent bulbs
    • Herbicides
    • Insecticides
    • Pet care products
    • Paint products
    • Photographic chemicals
    • Swimming pool chemicals
    • Automotive products and fluids

    Officials remind residents that these products, if improperly discarded, can threaten human health or the environment.

    Residents can always drop off items at the following locations:

    • Bakersfield – 4951 Standard St. – Tuesday – Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    • Mojave – 17035 Finnin St., Building #2 – Open the first Saturday in January, March, May, July, September, November from 9 a.m. to noon
    • Ridgecrest – 3301 W. Bowman Rd – Open the second and fourth Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
