New Americans receive citizenship at the César E. Chávez National Monument ahead of late activist’s birthday

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Cesar Chavez National Monument welcomed dozens to celebrate the activist’s birthday, while celebrating the newest American Citizens.

“You know, my father, he loved a good party,” said Paul Chavez, son of Cesar Chavez. “I can remember a lot of birthday parties where people would come from all over and then there would be a good dinner and then a lot of dancing.”

The party continues at his final resting place in Keene.

“It’s a happy day, I’m happy. Finally, after five years, it’s good,” said Navjod Singh, new American citizen.

That happy feeling is also bringing peace to many lives.

“I’m going to feel more free to be in this country because sometimes even if you have your green card, you feel like you can get it taken away,” said Jaqueline Uriosteugui. “Having my citizenship I feel more secure.”

A feeling of belonging that Cesar Chavez fought for.

“The fact that people have chosen to become citizens and now that they’re prepared, fully engaged in the civic and political affairs of our country, he’d be happy because that was something he believed in,” said Paul Chavez.

Paul still remembers his dad’s last birthday in Keene.

“I remember his last birthday in La Paz, before he passed away,” said Paul. “He invited family and friends to come to La Paz and him and my mother cooked a vegetarian meal for people. That was his parting gift for all of us.”
