Bear seen going through trash in Kernville neighborhood

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — A Kernville resident said she finally got what she was looking for after 16 years — a bear in her backyard.

A viewer shared video with 17 News of a hungry bear rummaging through some garbage bins. The bear sighting happened at around midnight on Sunday. The viewer said in all her years living in Kernville, she had not seen a bear in person, until the late-night encounter.

The viewer tells 17 News the bear only managed to find an empty take-out container.

Experts said forest fires in 2021 pushed bears and other wildlife to lower elevations, leading to increased sightings in recent years.
