Lithium-ion batteries linked to increased fires

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Lithium-ion batteries, commonly found in devices such as smartphones, laptops, and toys, are being linked to a rise in fires this year, according to fire officials.

The Honolulu Fire Department reported 29 battery-related fires so far in 2024, up from 25 incidents last year.

To prevent such fires, the Honolulu Fire Department advises using only the cords that come with devices and ensuring they are compatible.

Captain Malcolm Medrano of the Honolulu Fire Department emphasized the importance of proper storage:

“It’s crucial not to store e-bikes, e-scooters, or hoverboards indoors while they are charging. They should be kept outside in a well-ventilated and cool area to prevent overheating, which is a common cause of fires.”

If a device appears to be malfunctioning, officials recommend unplugging it and moving it away from any flammable materials.
