DLE collected hundreds of guns at buyback event

HONOLULU (KHON2) — The Department of Law Enforcement held another gun buyback event on Oahu Saturday and theyʻre calling it a success.

The DLE said 514 firearms, related items and rounds of ammunition were turned in at the event.

Among the pieces turned in were a fully automatic pistol, assault rifles, semi-automatic rifles, handguns, revolvers, shotguns, ghost guns and Glock switches.

Working and non-working firearms were accepted and owners who did not want to turn in guns but wanted to keep them safe were offered gun locks for free.

“We are truly gratified by the community response to this buyback program, which is just one way we are working to make our community safer. Turning in unwanted guns may help save a life and prevent a future crime from being committed,” said Department of Law Enforcement Director Jordan Lowe.

Altogether, a total of $53,100 in gift cards were given out today at the event.

DLE noted that the event was an amnesty program, meaning that no questions were asked about the person dropping off the guns and no identification was required.

Future events will be announced when finalized.
