Outages, shelters and closures on Big Island during Hone

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hone became a hurricane late Saturday night. A number of closures were announced on the Big Island and shelters were also opened across the island.

Closures

Beach parks have been closed from Laupahoehoe to Whittington and Kaʻū due to high surf.

Bus routes have also been canceled, according to Mayor Roth.

Shelters

A number of shelters opened at 2 p.m. and are staffed by the Red Cross. Those going to shelters must take their own bedding, food, water and medicine, phones, chargers and other necessities.

They are located at:

• Pahoa High School Gym
• Keaʻau High School Library and G Building
• Mountain View Elementary Cafeteria
• Waiakea High School Gym

Power Outages

Hawaiian Electric said they will no longer consider the Public Safety Power Shutoff as a safety measure for this event since the NWS canceled the red flag warning at 5 p.m.

HECO announced a power outage affecting nearly 3,000 customers on the Big Island on social media around 1 p.m. They confirmed the outages were not part of the PSPS program.

Power was restored in Hawaiian Paradise Park and Orchidland around 3 p.m.

HECO said power was restored in Kohala Estates, Kahua Seaview and Kawaihae Hawaiian Homes around 5:10 p.m.

Power was restored to customers in Waikiʻi Ranch and Hale Pohaku, HECO said at 5:45 p.m.

HECO said, just before 7 p.m., that power was restored in Kapoho and Nanawale.

At 6:30 p.m. HECO posted on social media that around 2,936 customers were without power from Keaʻau Ag lots to the Pzyck Road area.

Around 8 p.m. HECO said they were working to restore storm-related outages in the Puna area, around 1,742 customers.
