On Tuesday night, the City of Santa Clarita celebrated National Volunteer Month and approved a motion to fund homelessness services through Measure H in Valencia.

On Tuesday evening, the Santa Clarita City Council discussed Measure H and how it plans to spend more than $335,000 on homelessness housing.

Measure H funding is the Homeless Initiative which is the central coordinating body for Los Angeles County’s ongoing effort, unprecedented in scale, to expand and enhance services for people experiencing homelessness or at risk for losing their homes, according to Los Angeles County officials.

The city council members agreed on the motion, allocating approximately $309,000 to help Family Promise of Santa Clarita.

Family Promise proves temporary housing, meals and services to families members annually as they mentor families at risk of experiencing homelessness.

The organisation teaches financial literacy, helps find jobs and affordable housing, and creates programs to meet specific needs in their communities.

Family Promise advocated for public policies that alleviate poverty and promote the economic stability of low income families.

The Homeless Initiative was created by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors in August of 2015 as part of the county’s Chief Executive Office and primarily funded through Measure H, a ¼-cent sales tax.

Measure H is set to generate funding over the next ten years from 2017 through 2027 unless renewed, added LA County officials.

City officials also recognized several volunteers who volunteer with the City of Santa Clarita for National Volunteer Month.

“Volunteering is the backbone of our community and we are grateful to the thousands of volunteers for their dedication, hard work and passion for service,” said Mayor Pro tem Bill Miranda.

The next regular meeting of the City Council is scheduled for Tuesday, May 7, 2024 at 6 p.m.
