    Host: Matt Watson

Guests: Stephanie Byrne, Caron Berkoey, Melyssa Zive

On today’s Eye On The Valley, your host Matt Watson talks with Stephanie Byrne, a high school facilitator at iLead’s Agua Dulce campus.  Working with high school learners, Stephanie talks about the special features that make SCVi and iLead schools stand out.  At the Agua Dulce location, learners can enjoy an outdoor classroom with a mud kitchen, playground as well as donkeys, goats, horses and cows.  Learners can participate in their state standard courses as well as enjoy theater classes, clubs and travel.   Recently, the learners visited Washington D.C., with stops at Mount Vernon and Ford’s Theater.  Matt and Stephanie talk about the benefits of Project Based Learning which helps learners get hands-on with education like their recent Bucket Challenge to grow mushrooms out of mulch as well as Social Emotional Learning, helping them to adapt and change with their surroundings and peers.  The high school is proud to say they are doubling in size next year with spots still available by going to ileadaguadulce.org . SCVI and iLead schools are a cluster of free public charter schools with campuses in Lancaster and Santa Clarita as well as Agua Dulce.

In the second half of the show, Matt talks with Caron Berkoey and Melyssa Zive of ROWI.  ROWI, which stands for Roots and Wings, is a teen and parent wellness center with 16 locations throughout the southern California region.  ROWI offers a variety of assistance in a time where young children and teens need mental health attention.  Their Partial Hospitalization Program is a full day, 8 hour program and their Intensive Outpatient Program is a 3 hour program.  Individual and family group therapy is helpful to those children and their families ages 8-18 depending on the location.  They are family oriented, clinician owned and operated with groups of 8 people or less and a one to one staff client ratio.  Caron and Melyssa talks about the silver living of mental health being on the forefront of discussions lately, making their services more accessible and acceptable to those who need it. ROWI accepts more major insurance companies and is also offering a summer program.  Go to rowiteen.com for more information.
