How To Plan For Memorial Day Weekend

With Memorial Day weekend approaching, KHTS has put together recommended tips to have a safe, fun-filled vacation.

Memorial Day weekend 2024 is expected to be the second most traveled since AAA started tracking travel data.

This year, approximately 43.8 million travelers will hit the road and skies traveling more than 50 miles from their homes, AAA says.

“We haven’t seen Memorial Day weekend travel numbers like these in almost 20 years,” said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel . “We’re projecting an additional one million travelers this holiday weekend compared to 2019, which not only means we’re exceeding pre-pandemic levels but also signals a very busy summer travel season ahead.”

For Santa Clarita residents planning on traveling by car:

• Take your car to a shop like American Auto Repairs and Air Conditioning to make sure your vehicle is ready to take on the trip.
• Remember to also wear seatbelts,
• Get plenty of sleep before driving
• Never drink and drive
• When towing any kind of trailer, make sure chains do not drag to prevent sparking a wildfire.

Airports are also going to be a busy place this Memorial Day weekend.

AAA expects 3.51 million air travelers this holiday weekend, an increase of 4.8 percent over last year and a 9 percent jump compared to 2019.

This will be the most crowded Memorial Day weekend at airports since 2005, when 3.64 million flew for the holiday as the travel industry finally rebounded post-9/11, AAA officials said.

It is recommended that those traveling domestically arrive at the airport two hours before departure and three hours before departure if traveling internationally.
