MLB Trade Grades: Isiah Kiner-Falefa, having a career year, fills a need for the Pirates
Tim Britton: After filling their significant hole in the corner outfield with the earlier trade for Bryan De La Cruz, the Pirates raised their floor with the addition of Isiah Kiner-Falefa. Signed in the offseason by the Blue Jays to a more robust than expected two-year deal, Kiner-Falefa has delivered with the best season of his career. He’s produced well above the league average with his bat while playing strong defense all over the infield. The quality of his contact doesn’t fully support what he’s done so far, but the quantity of it helps; he rarely strikes out.
Pirates acquire LHP Josh Walker from Mets
The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired left-hander Josh Walker from the New York Mets on Tuesday in exchange for minor league southpaw Nicolas Carreno. Walker, 29, was designated for assignment last week after posting a 5.11 ERA with no decisions in 10 relief appearances for the Mets. The Pirates said he will report to Triple-A Indianapolis. The former 37th-round draft pick in 2017 made his Mets debut in 2023 and has a career record of 0-1 with a 6.45 ERA in 24 games (zero starts). Carreno, 18, signed with Pittsburgh last year out of Venezuela. He is 0-1 with a 3.74 ERA in eight starts this season in the Dominican Summer League. --Field Level Media.

One Wilson inched closer to returning and another left Pittsburgh Steelers training camp practice on a cart. Steelers rookie wide receiver Roman Wilson left Tuesday's practice for tests on his ankle and head coach Mike Tomlin was visibly concerned about his status. He appeared to sustain an ankle injury while being tackled on a jet sweep during a short-yardage drill. Tomlin said the injury to Wilson was unfortunate just as veteran quarterback Russell Wilson was taking the field for position drills. "Roman hurt his ankle in a tackle and they are evaluating him," Tomlin said. "To have more information on the extent of the injury and how long he could be out." Russell Wilson has been dealing with a strained calf and spent the first week of camp on the sideline at Tomlin's urging. Roman Wilson, 23, was a third-round pick (84th overall) in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan. He's expected to play a significant role for the Steelers, who traded Diontae Johnson to the Carolina Panthers. A couple minor additions for the Pirates, which has mostly been the theme of their trade deadline:. IKF is hitting a little bit this year, though he’s coming back from a knee injury. Decent bench player to have, raises the floor of that group for the Pirates. Ditto for De La Cruz, who is about a league average bat in the outfield. Fine to add. Not an impact guy.
