Fourth of July festivities planned throughout area

Happy Independence Day, folks! From Currituck to Ocracoke and everywhere in between, celebrate the 4 ^th this year with friends and family at one of the many local events.

Corolla, Historic Corolla Park, 5 to  9 p.m.

Enjoy live music by The Dickens, family activities, and food trucks (Fork’et Me Not, BJ’s Carolina Café, On the Spot Creamery, On the Spot Fry Wagon, Spare Parts BBQ, and SNOBX), and a fabulous fireworks show at dusk. Parking is first come, first serve, starting at 3 p.m.

Currituck Trading Post, 3581 Caratoke Hwy, Maple

The Trading Post is offering a full day of fun including corn hole, a craft beer trailer, fresh squeezed crushes, and food specials. Live music brought by Bonfire Brothers, DJ Tanqueray and Jen Exits. The evening will conclude with an onsite firework display.

Duck Annual 4 ^th of July Parade & Community Celebration, 9 a.m.

The Town of Duck is hosting its annual parade, beginning at the crest of the hill on Scarborough Lane. The 1-mile route will travel east toward the ocean, left onto Ocean Way, continuing on to Christopher Drive and ending on Pamela Court. No part of the parade will take place on Duck Road. Following the parade, head over to Duck Town Park for live music, cold refreshments, watermelon provided by Green Acres Farm Market, and the awarding of parade trophies: Mayor’s Award, Best Local Business Entry Award, Best Community Entry Award, and Spirit Award.

Kill Devil Hills, Avalon Pier, 9:15 p.m.

The Town of Kill Devil Hills will present its annual fireworks show at Avalon Pier, 2111 North Virginia Dare Trail (Milepost 6). Bring your beach chairs to any nearby access to watch the show from the shore. The show will also be livestreamed to the town’s Facebook and YouTube pages.

Nags Head, Nags Head Fishing Pier, 9:25 p.m.

Nags Head’s Fireworks Spectacular will once again be held at the Nags Head Fishing Pier, 3335 S. Virginia Dare Trail, Milepost 11.5 on July 4, with a rain date set for Friday, July 5. Visitors are encouraged to enjoy the show from the following beach accesses: south of Nags Head Fishing Pier: Curlew Street, Hollowell Street, and Conch Street; north of Nags Head Fishing Pier: Bladen Street, Bittern Street, Bonnett Street, and Blackman Street. Those attending the show are encouraged to park east of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway and use designated crosswalks. Those choosing to park west of U.S. Highway 158/South Croatan Highway should use extreme caution while attempting to cross this heavily traveled roadway and use designated crosswalks. Do not block private driveways or walk on dunes.

Manteo, George Washington Creef Park & Festival Park, beginning at 3 p.m.

The fun begins in Manteo at George Washington Creef Park, 104 Fernando Street, at 3 p.m. with a welcome and National Anthem, followed by the decorated bike contest and kids parade. Entries for the Apple Pie Contest need to be dropped off between 2 and 3 p.m. Enjoy food trucks, games and live music. Riggsbee Road performs at 4 p.m., followed by The Brickhouse Band at 6 and DJ Mixin’ Mike will take the stage at 7:45 p.m. Over at the Roanoke Island Festival Park stage, U.S. Army Training & Doctrine Command Band will be playing from 7:45 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Fireworks begin after dark. Parking is available throughout town in designated lots. Shuttles will run from the College of The Albemarle, Manteo Middle School and Manteo High School.

Avon, Avon Fishing Pier, 9 p.m.

Down south, enjoy a great fireworks show beside the Avon Fishing Pier, 41001 N.C. Highway 12. Check the Avon Fishing Pier Facebook page for updates and parking information.

Ocracoke

On Wednesday, July 3, from 3 to 6 p.m., stop in at the Fundraising Fish Fry for OPS at the Island Inn Commons, followed by an Old fashioned Ocracoke Square Dance in the Berkley Barn with Molasses Creek from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Charge at the door: $5 for adults 13 and over.

Thursday, July 4, from 9:30 a.m. – noon, take in the 43rd Annual Sand Sculpture Contest at the NPS Lifeguard Beach. From 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1:30 – 4:30 p.m., the Ocracoke Lighthouse will be open for viewing the inside; no climbing. Islander Chester Lynn will be there to talk. The Old Time Independence Day Parade starts at 4 p.m. This year’s theme is Old Tyme Ocracoke. All are welcome to enter the parade to vie for Best Walk & Roll, Best Wheels, Best Float, Best Theme and Best in Show. Entry forms available at post office. Sign up starts at 2:30 p.m. at Old Beach Road. Parade starts at Old Beach Road and ends at NPS docks. The Hyde County Sheriff’s Office admonishes spectators not to throw water of any kind at the parade members, and no political themes. Awards will be at 5:30 p.m. For parade and sculpture contest winners at the Books to Be Red stage. BYO seating. That evening at 6 p.m., stop in at the fundraising cookout at the United Methodist Church. Finish off the weekend with a Community Beach Fire under the Stars at the Ocracoke Day Use Area/NPS Lifeguard Beach. BYO beach blankets, chairs, marshmallows and roasting sticks. 7 to 10 p.m.
